The traditional friendly curtain raiser to the Worthing Chess Club season took place on Monday 14th September and resulted in a draw (scores below).
The match was unusual for several reasons, most notably the absence of both the Chairman and the Secretary!
Best wishes go to Chris Boyes for a speedy recovery. And a special request goes out to Chris Jones to please ensure that his wedding anniversary does not fall on the 2nd Monday of September - the organisation of the match by the stand-in secretary left a lot to be desired.
There was a great turn out from the junior membership – the future for Worthing looks really bright and special thanks goes to our senior members who agreed to quick play finishes to ensure the juniors could get away by 9pm.
On board 7, we must have had one of the youngest ever matches played at the club – Kieran Quinlan (10) vs. Cassie Graham (8).
After a more or less random allocation of players to teams, and with 3 different time controls operating across the 7 boards, the match started and Robin Fells got the Secretary’s team off to a great start. Stalemate followed soon after on board 7 but then the Chairman’s team reeled off 3 wins in a row – Dave Wallis and Dave Bradley showing they were not ready to let the juniors take over just yet.
After a couple of hours play, Dave Graham managed to consolidate his early advantage over Matt, and Will Graham followed up with an impressive win to equalize the match.
Thanks to all who turned out, here’s to another enjoyable season.
